N5 Level (N5 レベル)
The ability to understand some basic use of the Japanese language.
Begin with Basics
Preparing for and taking the 'JLPT N5' exam is a great learning experience and motivator for beginner-level Japanese language students. It can be puzzling to wrap your head around a new language. Having an exam to work towards can give you structure and learning goals that help take your language skills to the next level. The N5 isn’t going to land you a job with a Japanese company, but it does exhibit your ability to understand the building blocks of the language. This foundation is essential to the success of your Japanese learning journey. You should be able to read and understand typical expressions and sentences written in hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji. As well as be able to listen and understand conversations about regular day-to-day life and classroom situations, and be able to pick up necessary information from short conversations spoken slowly.
Determination of Pass/Fail
To pass,
(1) Total score needs to be at or above the point required for passing (overall pass mark).
(2) Score in each scoring section needs to be at or above the minimum point required for passing (sectional pass mark).
If there is even one scoring section where the score is below the sectional pass mark, examinees are deemed to have failed, regardless of their total score.
Examinees will be considered to have failed if they miss a test section. Although they will receive a ‘Score Report’, it will not show scores for any test section, including those that have been taken.
